The QR code · Reviewed 30 September 2026

The QR code is not the passport. It is the way in.

A battery passport is reached through a QR code carried on the battery and linked to its unique identifier. Printing the code is the easy half; what it resolves to is the requirement.

What the code carries

The code is tied to the battery’s unique identifier — one battery, one identifier, one record. It is not a link to a product page or a model datasheet: two batteries of the same model have different passports, because their histories differ.

What it must resolve to

An electronic record for that individual battery, reachable without an account, and readable by a machine as well as a person. The Commission describes a decentralised arrangement: the detailed information stays with the responsible operator rather than sitting in a central registry, so the code has to reach a record somebody is keeping.

That is the part that cannot be retrofitted on the deadline. A code can be printed in an afternoon; a history cannot.

Who sees what

Not everything in a passport is public. The regulation distinguishes information available to anyone scanning the code from information available to specified parties — which means one identifier has to serve several audiences without the narrow view leaking the rest.

Adaptr serves a deliberately narrow public record at a scanned code’s address, and holds the fuller record behind the customer’s own access. The registered identifier of the economic operator, for instance, is kept off the public page.

Why a sticker is not compliance

A QR code that resolves to a page with the right headings and no recorded history behind it is a passport in appearance only. From 18 Feb 2027 the record behind the code is what is being required, and the fields it asks for are set out in Annex XIII rather than chosen by whoever built the page.

A practical first step

Scan one of your own batteries.

Bring a battery and we will show you what its record looks like today, and what a passport would still be missing.
